China Trains with Kids: Tickets, Seats and Station Planning

For a family train trip in China, check each child’s ticket and document before choosing the timetable. Then plan the station entrance, seats, food, bags and hotel transfer as one travel day. The shortest advertised train ride is not always the easiest family journey.

Official sources checked and guide updated: 2026-11-02. Verify the current instructions for your actual journey before booking.

Child tickets depend on age on the travel date

The current Chinese 12306 children’s FAQ gives age-based rules for children traveling with adults. It expressly calculates age on the date of travel. Use that source rather than an older height-based summary that may still appear in an English FAQ.

Child ticket decisions for an accompanied journey
Child’s age or situationTicket decisionImportant condition
Under 6; one child with each ticketed adultCan travel free without a separate occupied seat.Declare the free child in advance when booking; use the child’s valid identity document.
Under 6; needs a separate seatBuy a child discount ticket. The free-child arrangement does not provide a separate seat.
Additional under-6 children beyond one per ticketed adultBuy child discount tickets for the additional children.Count the adult tickets and free children before purchase.
From the sixth birthday until before the fourteenth birthdayBuy a child discount ticket. The child’s date, train and class must match the accompanying adult’s ticket.
From the fourteenth birthdayBuy a full-fare ticket.Do not apply the under-14 child-discount rule.

For an ordinary family holiday, children under 14 should travel with an adult. The official source names limited exceptions for school commuting and children the railway agrees to supervise; do not interpret those exceptions as a general unaccompanied-child service.

A child-discount ticket does not mean that every train class is always exactly half price. The current Chinese FAQ distinguishes ordinary-train components, several high-speed seat classes and sleeper fares, with additional fare conditions. Compare the actual fare displayed for the adult and child in your selected class. If you want an independent sleeper berth, confirm its price and arrangement instead of assuming that a free child has one.

Prepare each child’s own document and declaration

12306 says to buy a real-name ticket using the child’s own valid identity document. For an international visitor with a foreign passport, check the child’s passport details through the supported booking workflow. A parent’s passenger profile should not be used as a substitute for the child’s ticket identity.

The children’s FAQ also says that a free child must be declared to the railway in advance during booking, and that the valid identity document used in the declaration serves as the child’s travel credential. “No paid seat” therefore does not mean “no passenger details.” Check that the declaration is present rather than assuming a child in your family group was automatically added.

Make a private family checklist with each traveler’s name, document used, ticket or free-child status, and booked seat if any. Keep the original documents used for the bookings or declaration accessible. For unfamiliar passport fields, consult our foreign-passport booking guide and the official instructions before payment.

Here is a hypothetical example: one ticketed adult accompanies a 4-year-old and a 7-year-old. The 4-year-old can be the declared free child if no independent seat is needed; the 7-year-old needs a child ticket. If the 4-year-old needs an independent seat too, purchase a child ticket for that seat. This example explains the age and seat logic, not a promised fare or guaranteed adjacent seating.

Choose a timetable and class your family can use

Work backwards from bedtime, meals and the arrival transfer. A dawn departure includes waking, dressing, leaving the hotel and reaching the station before the train time. A late arrival includes getting off, finding the exit, reaching the hotel and possibly waiting to check in. Compare those full sequences before choosing the fastest train.

For a first rail day, a direct service with a straightforward hotel transfer can be easier than a short connection. If a change of trains is necessary, verify whether it is at the same station, what passenger checks apply and how much walking is involved. Do not promise children a bathroom or snack stop during a transfer that depends on rushing.

Review the actual assigned seats after booking. A request for neighboring seats is not proof that the order provides them. If seats are separated, contact the booking channel while there is time to discuss permitted changes. Use our hard-sleeper and soft-sleeper comparison when deciding whether an overnight journey suits the family.

Ask the railway about the specific train if a child needs an accessible toilet, help boarding or another essential facility. This guide cannot guarantee that every carriage has the same layout or services. For a mobility device, explain the folded size and assistance needed before buying a journey whose success depends on those details.

Manage the station with clear roles and reachable essentials

At home, decide who holds documents and who manages each bag. With two adults, one can handle the ticket and document conversation while the other watches the children and luggage. A solo adult needs a lighter arrangement: fewer separate pieces and essentials reachable without opening a full suitcase.

Keep passports, the saved ticket details, wipes, a change of clothes, familiar food, water and a quiet activity in an accessible bag. Plan ordinary toilet visits before the boarding announcement when possible, but do not rely on a universal boarding-closing time. Follow the station’s actual gate information and instructions.

The 12306 luggage FAQ gives children a 10 kg free carry allowance and other ordinary passengers 20 kg, with size and per-item limits. It separately allows a folding stroller used by an accompanying infant free without counting it in that allowance. This does not establish an unlimited allowance for every type of stroller or guarantee where it can stand on every train. Ask about a larger stroller and keep shared spaces clear.

Practice folding the stroller and lifting your bags before the trip. At the station, follow the available route and staff directions around stairs, lifts and security. If the route is awkward, ask for assistance early. Do not plan around a lift that you have not confirmed when carrying the equipment would otherwise be impossible.

Prepare the onboard routine and an easy arrival

Pack familiar snacks and ordinary supplies that comply with rail security rules. If a dietary or medical need is essential, bring the appropriate supplies and seek suitable professional advice; do not rely on a carriage shop to carry a particular product. Keep medicines and documents accessible and check restrictions for any special equipment or liquids.

Give children a simple sequence: find the carriage, put bags away safely, settle in the assigned seats, and watch for the arrival stop. Keep aisles and doors clear. Follow staff instructions for storage rather than balancing a heavy bag where it could fall or placing a stroller across a passage.

Before the train reaches your stop, save the hotel address in Chinese and confirm the pickup or onward transport plan. A taxi may reduce transfers with several bags, but check the pickup point and whether the vehicle can accommodate your family and equipment. If you need a suitable child restraint, arrange and confirm it with the provider in advance; the guide does not assume one will be available on demand.

Treat arrival food, the bathroom and hotel access as the first activities in the new city. Leave a recovery block before a timed attraction. If the family itinerary repeats stressful station days every other morning, remove a hotel move or spend longer in one base rather than adding more tricks to an overfull schedule.

A family rail-day checklist that changes the plan

Before committing to a family rail leg
QuestionWhat to confirmIf it is unresolved
Does every child have the correct status?Age on travel date, own document, ticket or free-child declaration.Resolve the booking details before paying.
Can we use the assigned seats?Seat locations and any separately required berth.Discuss available changes with the booking channel.
Can the adults move all the equipment?Bags, folded stroller, station route and assistance needs.Pack less, confirm assistance or choose a simpler transfer.
Will the arrival be manageable?Hotel address, pickup point, food and room access.Change the timing or simplify the first evening.

Copy the unresolved item into your travel note with a specific action: “Ask the railway about the stroller,” “Confirm the child declaration,” or “Ask the hotel when the room is available.” A concrete question is more useful than marking the entire journey “family friendly.” Recheck issued tickets and current official instructions before departure.

Common questions

Are children under six always free on China trains?

Each ticketed adult may bring one under-six child free when the child does not occupy an independent seat. Declare the child in advance using their valid document. Additional under-six children, or a child needing an independent seat, need child discount tickets.

Can I book a child’s ticket using my own passport?

The current Chinese children’s FAQ says to use the child’s own valid identity document for the real-name ticket. Check the foreign-passport workflow for that child rather than substituting the parent’s passenger profile.

Is a child train ticket always half the adult fare?

No. The current official FAQ has different calculations for certain seat classes and sleepers, plus fare conditions. Review the actual child fare and seat or berth arrangement for your selected train before paying.
