How to Buy Train Tickets in China
Buy the intended China train journey: check each passenger, exact stations, accommodation, charges and order status, then keep the required identity document ready.
Choose the channel and understand its job
Begin with the passenger and the journey you intend to buy. A useful booking specifies the right person, exact stations, date, train and accommodation. The lowest search price alone does not establish those details.
China Railway's English FAQ identifies 12306.cn and its app as official booking channels. It also describes railway ticket counters and other applicable sales channels. Shanghai's government booking guide, visibly updated 11 June 2026, explains the app search and purchase sequence. Use the current official instructions for the channel and document you actually have.
If you choose an agency, identify who issues the booking, which service fees apply, and where to ask about changes or a failed request. Separate the agency's request or payment acknowledgement from a confirmed railway booking. Do not assume the railway will resolve every third-party transaction in the same way.
Check each passenger before an order
Compare each selected passenger with the current valid identity document. The English FAQ tells users booking for others to enter their name, document type and number accurately in My Passengers and follow the displayed verification instructions.
A saved name can be familiar while the document number or expiry belongs to an older passport. An account holder's correct registration does not verify every companion selected for this order. Make the comparison privately before paying.
For the English website's foreign-passport fields and unusual-name questions, use the passport name and document checklist. Follow current official guidance when a field or verification status is unclear. Do not change a person's identity by trial and error to clear a prompt.
For a child, confirm the current child-ticket and document process applicable to the channel and journey. A family request needs each passenger checked; do not apply an old height rule or assume a child automatically has a separate seat or berth.
Search the exact station pair and dated journey
Keep the complete departure and arrival station names. A city may have several stations, so check the station location against the hotel and onward transport before choosing a departure. Save the Chinese name if available.
Read departure date and time together, then arrival date and time separately. An overnight arrival may be on a different date. Keep that information with the exact train identifier, rather than infer the journey from a destination name shared by several services.
Compare the door-to-door arrangement as well as the train duration. Consider reaching the correct station, managing checks and bags, and leaving the arrival station at the stated hour. If the trip uses connecting trains, use the transfer and backup checklist; identical city names do not prove identical stations.
Check the class and actual accommodation
For a daytime train, compare the seating offered on that service. For overnight travel, check the sleeper category and actual carriage arrangement. A more expensive seat is not automatically a sleeper, and a soft-sleeper request does not by itself establish a lower berth or a private compartment.
Compare hard and soft sleepers, berth levels and booking details. The two cutaways explain common conventional patterns; the preference and allocation records help check the exact train. Use the actual order to establish each traveller's assigned place.
If an allocation, companion proximity or assistance arrangement is necessary, resolve it through the applicable booking or railway channel before depending on it. Keep an acceptable alternative when the requirement cannot be met. Do not plan to occupy another passenger's place or rely on an unconfirmed exchange.
Review the information and charges before payment
Review the selected order rather than an earlier search result. Keep the cost, status and journey fields separate. A detail that remains unknown should be a question to resolve, not a value guessed to finish the purchase.
| Check | What to compare | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger | The selected record against the current required document | That another saved passenger or account holder was selected correctly |
| Journey | Full stations, departure and arrival dates, times and train | That a similar destination or previous search is this order |
| Accommodation | Class and actual allocation information where available | That a request for a level or shared compartment is confirmed |
| Charges | Fare and separately disclosed channel fees | That two prices on different trains are an equivalent class comparison |
| Terms | Current payment, change and refund instructions for this order | That a correction, upgrade or cancellation will be free |
Use the applicable current instructions for payment and deadlines. This guide provides no universal sales window, fee schedule or correction promise. The reviewed public English pages retain some older wording alongside updates; ask about the current process for the actual order when the instructions are unclear.
Read confirmation as information about the booking
The public English order template separates train, passenger and seat information, price and status. Check that the booking channel reports a completed booking and that its details describe the intended traveller and journey. A pending request, failed payment or message saying a preferred berth has been requested is not the same outcome.
A confirmation note helps you retain the booking details. It is not a replacement identity document or a separate credential that automatically grants boarding. For railway e-tickets, the English FAQ requires the valid identity document used to purchase the ticket and says an itinerary sheet and reimbursement receipt are not tickets.
Use the Chinese ticket-field guide to separate train, carriage, assigned place, gate and platform. Save useful journey information offline, while keeping full document numbers, private references and payment details out of shared copies.
Prepare the document and station approach
Keep the required original document accessible for the journey. Follow current station announcements, displays and staff guidance for entry, identity checks, security, gate and boarding. If an automated check cannot handle the document, seek the appropriate staffed assistance.
12306 says ticket checks stop before departure and directs passengers to the station announcement for the timing. Plan enough time for reaching the correct entrance and completing the actual checks; a universal buffer copied from another station does not guarantee boarding.
The train booking and boarding guide covers the complete station sequence. Match the exact train before following the current gate, and then find the allocated carriage and place.
Ask about the exact order when something is wrong
Describe the actual problem: wrong passenger, renewed document, wrong station, unsuitable allocation, payment uncertainty or a change to the intended travel date. Keep the reference available privately for the issuing channel or railway staff when needed.
| Observed problem | Useful question |
|---|---|
| Saved passenger differs from the current passport | What entry or correction process applies at this stage? |
| Order remains unconfirmed | What is the current status and next permitted action? |
| Allocation does not meet a necessary requirement | What change or alternative is available for this order? |
| You may miss the departure | What current procedure applies to this ticket now? |
A saved-profile edit does not automatically rewrite a paid order. Availability and the applicable process control changes; retain an alternative instead of treating a general help note as a guarantee.
